Chapter 3

Harper’s Bazaar was happy with the pictures I had sent and life was going on like always. I hadn’t heard of Blake in two days. Jessica had texted me to apologize for the glass and I realized I was simply driving her insane. I felt bad for how she ended up acting because of her feelings she had for me, it was simply not healthy anymore. I was just on the verge to text her back, I just didn’t know what, when Jane entered my office.

“Hey, I just called Blake’s team for the invoice on the gin shooting and found out her father died,” she said.

“What? Really?” I stared at her.

“Yeah, there was a misunderstanding with some details and they said they would contact us when they could reach her. Thought you… might want to know.”

“Yes… thank you,” I said and Jane nodded, leaving my office.

I closed the message I was going to send to Jessica and called Blake, but it went directly to voicemail. I put my phone down and waited a few minutes, then I tried again with the same result. As I sat there, I pictured her alone in her hometown that she had left and never looked back, together with her family which with she hadn’t spoken in years and I just couldn’t handle the thought. I looked at the clock, it was ten in the morning and then tried recalling hard where Blake was. She had told me the name of the town years ago and it popped up into my mind so I googled it. Two hours away. I decided instantly and jumped up from my chair.

“Cancel whatever I have on my schedule for today. I’ll be out of town.”

“You have Joseph’s shooting tomorrow, for his boat, you were supposed to leave in the evening so you can start early in the morning.”

“Yes, right, anyway send Lafayette ahead and I’ll be there when I’ll be there. Don’t tell Joseph anything, he’ll just panic. I have to be with Blake,” I grabbed my bag and rushed out.

“Ok, be safe!” I heard Jane call after me as I got out the door.

I took a cab home; luckily my bag was already packed, I only had to change into black clothes, got to my car fast and drove away. Usually, I prefer cruising when I need to be somewhere, but this time I hit the gas pedal like a maniac passing car after car not carrying if I caught any radar. I could deal with that later.

It was around two o’clock when I finally reached the small town and I had no idea what to do. I didn’t know where Blake lived and she was still not picking up her phone so I tried out my luck and went inside the only church I could find. There was indeed a funeral going on and I arrived at the end where the family was thanking the attendants. I looked around and noticed Blake at the front together with a man and a woman I assumed were her siblings.
